Chapter Nine
I hadn't seen David for three days, and I was beginning to wonder whether he'd left for good. Perhaps he'd had a change of mind about blackmailing me. A dangerous game.
Maybe Richard had fired him. I'd not mentioned the gardener to Richard, and he'd said nothing to me. Mind games? Neither had I heard from Maggie, and I began to wonder whether Richard had known about my illicit affairs and had warned off my lovers. Chris hadn't visited me for sex, and Terry had not contacted me about the summerhouse.
I felt alone, abandoned in lust as I slipped into my miniskirt. Alone in marriage. Gazing out of the bedroom window as I buttoned my blouse, I noticed David tending the plants in the border by the hedge. I frowned, wondering where he'd been. Richard obviously hadn't fired him. My frown turning into a grin, my clitoris pulsing, I checked my long blonde hair in the mirror and went downstairs. I was about to wander into the garden and make out I hadn't noticed him when the phone rang. To my surprise it was Maggie. She sounded worried as she made her excuses for not contacting me, and I instinctively knew she was lying.
'You've been ill?' I asked.
'Yes. As I said, it must have been something I ate.'
'But you're all right now?'
'Yes, I'm fine now.'
'In that case come round for coffee.'
'No, I can't, Sarah,' she faltered.
'Can't, or won't?'
'The thing is... Oh, I don't know. I can't lie to you. I haven't been ill. Richard spoke to Tim.'
'And you're not allowed to see me, is that it?'
'How did you know? What has Richard said to you?'
'Richard never says anything to me. Unless he wants to moan, that is. OK, so what's been said?'
'I don't know where to begin,' she sighed.
'Come round and we'll talk about it.'
'Sarah, if I...'
'Whose life is it, Maggie?'
'I'll be with you in ten minutes,' she conceded.
'Good. I'll put the kettle on.'
Richard was a first-rate bastard. I thought he'd been up to something, and I was right. To keep my friends away from me was despicable. Who did he think he was, my keeper? My jailer, more like. I was fuming. My stomach churning, my fists clenched, I was absolutely livid. But I knew I shouldn't let him get to me. I didn't know what had been said, and there was no point in speculating. Once I'd spoken to Maggie and discovered the facts, I'd take it from there. Speculating? I knew damned well what Richard had done, and why. He didn't want me to have any friends. He didn't want me to have anyone other than him. He didn't want me to have a life outside the confines of our marriage.
Only a short time after we'd married I'd been telling him about a friend of mine. I'd not seen her for several years and had bumped into her at the local shop. When I got home I told Richard about her. She'd done well, and I'd been excited for her.
